I actually liked this more than I thought I would. It just goes to show how much expectations can influence a viewing.

A fun smart modern day black and white throwback to classic b movie horror sci-fi flicks.

Was a blast to show this at Dark Bridges. I love the absurdism.

Still the best and great to see it with an audience at Dark Bridges.
One “hell” of an ending but I just found I didn’t care about the heroes.
Low budget modern day Herschell Gordon Lewis influenced psychedelic horror trip. Some good gore and creature effects, some noisy tripped out visuals, and some good humour make it a fun watch.

Liked the atmosphere and the characters but I have some issues with the plot that took me out of the movie.

Extra half star for it being a Drunken Cinema screening that went over really well with our very own Ghostface wandering in the theatre.
Love the setting and all the effort put in to make it beautiful. Felt it did start to drag at a few points but the ending is one hell of an ending.

Overall good entertainment. The three stories are better by themselves than with the fourth one tying them together. The end scene makes me think a lot of predators are not that good at fighting or that they just take on too tough of hunts.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/predator-killer-of-killers/
The movie is hurt by the fact that it takes place in the Wick universe which means comparisons to the other movies need to be made. While the big climactic battle (don’t want to spoil it) is pretty damn cool the rest of the action including both Eve and Wick doesn’t really feel as cool or energetic. The movie also suffers in that the henchmen and mini-bosses aren’t as cool as the one’s Wick has survived through. I doubt I’ll ever revisit it (I have revisited all the Wick movies a few times already). There is another part at the end which I’m not a fan of. Not going to get into spoilers but it does take away a bit from the movie as a whole.

Still a favourite of mine. I love that it feels all twisty and turns with what is going on even though it’s really straight forward once you realize what is going on. The gondola set piece is amazing. I also want the original poster.

Figured out the mystery movie at Landmark was this by the rating and time. Was very happy the screening was what I thought it would be. I had kept myself from knowing anything about this other than that it is not a Stephen King horror. Really dug it overall but and enjoyed the 3 parts and how it told the story. I liked the themes and the whole point but it didn’t fully nail the ending for me 100%. I think I was expecting the ending to be more impactful but I had already taken in the themes and the meaning of the movie before the wrap up.

Been meaning to watch this ever since it came out. Was a big fan of CHASER and love THE WAILING. Bleak yet fun thriller with a hero and big bad that are pretty much Terminators.

Still not sure anything beats the deer fight in the Detective Dee movies but this one sure comes close with the ending battle. I do wish it didn’t rely on a deus ex machina for the end but it was still crazy fun.

Finished ANDOR so I figured I had to watch the movie. Other than Vader’s dad joke and one or two call backs to the original series, it is still great and still holds 3rd spot in my ranking of all STAR WARS movies.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/rogue-one-a-star-wars-story/1/
I should like this more than I did. The gross out moments are done extremely well and the movie is beautifully shot. Unfortunately, I just didn’t connect with the story and I feel like that this is the stereotypical A24 movie about dealing with trauma. I’ll give it another shot at some point as it may have just been a mood I’m in thing possibly.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/bring-her-back/
CAT III revenge flick. Be sure you know what you are getting into before watching. Is pretty nasty and gory but also has a wheelchair kung fu.
Finally seeing this. I’m not sure it succeeds in critiquing the way women are viewed and treated in Japanese games and media but it is definitely an interesting watch with enough gore and shocks. I am going to have to revisit as I feel it is a movie that will grow on me more with each rewatch.
Crazy fun at times that it is a good watch but it also drags a bit at other times. I know it’s not really the case but I feel CAT III films should be more extreme than they often are.
Did not expect all the stuff in the middle. Found that it dragged some parts but Hackman is great in it.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/french-connection-ii/
Realized tonight that I had never seen this so I fixed that problem. The story is a bit of a mess but I was really just here to watch people getting shot in cool ways. It’s also fun to watch Chow Yun Fat make faces, give thumbs up and throw a tantrum while destroying food.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/a-better-tomorrow-ii/
The humour at the beginning didn’t click with me but as the series continues on the story, themes, and characters show serious maturity in addition to silliness. This is a much watch and one of the best anime series that I’ve seen.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/fullmetal-alchemist-brotherhood/
Watched a video on YouTube about the opening scene so I had to rewatch the movie again. I’m torn on which I prefer, this or Fistful of Dynamite. Everyone always focuses on the Eastwood films from Sergio Leone but I feel they are not his masterpieces.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/once-upon-a-time-in-the-west/
Was expecting something more weird along the lines of Videodrome or Crimes of the Future but dealing with death and what remains after. It is something that I’ll need to revisit as there is a whole lot more going on than one watch can provide.
A f’ed up trip down toxic masculinity, wants and regrets. Cage gives a powerful performance that doesn’t feel like showboating. Another movie that makes me afraid to ever visit Australia.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/the-surfer-2024/
It’s another okay slasher horror. Some of the humour hits well but the whole premise feels a bit to teen horror novel. If I was thirteen and this was an early horror experience, I’d be all over it. I’m not 13 and it’s not my first horror movie so it’s just fine and a way to kill a hour and a half.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/clown-in-a-cornfield/
It was fine. Better than some of the previous Marvel movies.
A rewatch but it’s also one I one I remembered nothing about. Way darker and cynical than i thought it was going to be.

Crazy fun, my only wish is that it was more sleazy than it is.
A second theatrical screening almost a year after seeing it at Fantasia. This time at Cinergie. I still loved this movie. I can’t believe how quickly the time flies watching it. Its classic layered revenge and redemption tale that I wouldn’t change anything in.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/the-count-of-monte-cristo-2024/1/
Loved this. I love the impact of the music scenes so much. The scene in the hall that transcends time and calls to both the living and the dead is done so well and The Rocky Road to Dublin scene is pure beauty. The movie is constantly building and dealing with the ideas of sins fulfilling people and are not always evil is a powerful message.
I have heard people feel the last third feels rushed but by that point I was fully living in the world and do not feel that the focus of the movie should be on the last third.
Watching this also has made me want to revisit (again) BLACK SNAKE MOAN for the music and how it talks about the power of music.
Currently it is my favourite of the year and I am sure my respect for it will grow upon rewatches.
Amped up on drugs Predator alien action movie that is way better than it is given credit for. Even if the satire is not intentional, which I feel it is, it is a crazy fun 80s action movie that laughs at so many of the tropes. If you don’t think it’s a good movie you still can’t help but have fun with how bat shit crazy it gets.
A fun little twisty Korean horror thriller with some noir elements. Watched on a whim when it came up on YouTube. I might do a rewatch at a later time as I was a bit tired while watching and I don’t feel I gave it my full attention.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/a-bloodthirsty-killer/
Strong performances but watching it after knowing it’s going to try and subvert the viewers’ expectations didn’t ruin the twists but it blunted them for sure. It also feels a little bit pretentious in its need to have the Shot in 35mm on the opening and the extended end scene feels like it’s deliberately trying to create the next big ending scene for an actress like in IMMACULATE or PEARL. Those scenes felt organic here it felt placed in. I would have liked to have seen it at a fest completely blind as I may have liked it more then.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/strange-darling/
Wanted to do a re-watch to see if my original thoughts had changed. I stand by my original review. Most of the cast is forgettable, having them be younger and less worn down by the system is a detriment, not enough time is spent with the characters before hell breaks loose, and some of the call backs are unnecessary fan service which feels out of place.
It’s a roller coaster thrill ride that is fine but is also pretty hollow and misses the mark compared to the original first two movies.
Andy is still the best character and I’d prefer it if they stopped trying to create a new Ripley each time as she is iconic and you’re setting yourself up to fail.

Watched as a curio. Angie Dickinson, Rock Hudson, Telly Savalas, and Roddy McDowell in a 70s sex comedy written by Gene Roddenberry and Directed by Roger Vadim (Barbarella). Comedy doesn’t really work that well and the whole murder mystery is not really a mystery as you are let in on who the murderer is. It’s very much of its time but that doesn’t really add or take away from the movie. Enjoyed seeing it as a curio piece but it’s not a very good movie.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/pretty-maids-all-in-a-row/
Not at the level of the Raid movies but that is a very high bar. It does remind me also of the chaos of his Gangs of London series. The gun fights are gory and pretty spectacular my only real problem is that the triad henchmen feel a bit too much like fodder to just work through. Still enjoyed it and will revisit again.
Smart and fun story. Strides above similar stories with great character work. Action and violence is limited and that also works very well.
It’s if it’s time and I loved it. I know there was probably a script but the whole movie feels like Caan and Arkin were told to just improvise and screw around with each other, the supporting characters and even the whole city. A total blast that is really insane. I’m not sure if it is but it might be the first buddy cop parody.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/freebie-and-the-bean/
Haven’t seen this since it first came out and I did not remember a thing about it and I think there is a reason behind why I couldn’t remember it. Has a cool look and style like all of Mann’s films but the story is pretty generic.
A lot of fun that mixes western, comedy, action, and tragedy. It does suffer from a bit of pacing issues. The dance on glass scene is amazing and I never expected to see a fight like the last fight.
Still a brilliant deconstruction of the western gunslinger mythic. Watching it tonight reminded me I still have never seen the Ken Wanatabe version.
Something about this rewatch made my mind wander a bit. I don’t feel my 4 star rating today does the movie justice but more my mood while watching.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/ghost-in-the-shell/
Has a couple of good moments but it doesn’t know how to nail the tone. It wants moments to be funny and other moments to be meaningful but just couldn’t be either. It’s a shame as the concept is great and could have been a lot of fun.

Another movie, like last night’s watch of Fight or Flight that unfortunately follows better movie. It really should not be in the discussion along with Everything Everywhere at Once as they are very different movies but I see a bunch of reviews where people mention it.
I loved the Raven & Ashley story and even got a kick out of other hitmen pair and their characters. The Marvin & Rose story is okay. The action is fun enough but not outstanding. Overall an okay fun watch.

Dumb bloody fun. It’s too bad we already had movies like Bullet Train and Kill. Still worth watching and enjoying.

Convoluted but also a bunch of fun with witches, hopping vampires, lethal poisonings, nudity, and fun fights. It feels like it was influenced by Evil Dead but it also came out in 1981. There are a bunch of widely known and seen Shaw a Brothers films and the. There are the lesser known ones that are a blast to discover. If you can track this down it’s a fun watch.
Suffers when compared to Del Toro’s films but most films do. I really dug the contained story, villains, as well as the setting. Basically, it was better than expected and worth a watch.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/hellboy-the-crooked-man/
Beautifully shot. Somehow manages to feel like the same world but also totally different at the same time. Doesn’t connect with me the same way that the original does but also still pushes a bunch of interesting buttons about identity and loneliness.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/blade-runner-2049/
Still love the art style and the movie still holds up on a rewatch with its amazing story. It’s powerful, thrilling and fun. I love how meta the series is. Of all the superhero movies and series this is the top. I can’t wait until the end. I wish it wasn’t going to be another year or more.

A little bit long but I loved the first hour as the story was being unveiled. Really beautiful movie. Also loved the shifting of who is the hero and the main character of the movie and also the role of women. I don’t know enough about Buddhism but I can definitely feel its importance in the story.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/a-touch-of-zen/
Lots of stuff that doesn’t really make sense and my low expectations going in helped to make it a bit more enjoyable. Don’t regret watching and finishing off the series.

First revisit since theatrical and this time was the director’s cut. Been long enough that I don’t remember what is different other than adding the chapters. It flies at 3 hours and it still gave me goosebumps when the music hits with the return to the Overlook. Rose the Hat is an amazing villain.
Sure the movie is of its time with Caine’s and Hill’s characters but this one is one I have a total soft spot for. The getaway scene is amazing in how it feels fast paced even though it’s not really that fast paced and it has so many cool for the sake of being cool shots. I love the ending and Caine singing the theme is a total blast.

Rewatch of one my favourites on the brand new 4K release. Still holds up as a wicked fun western action blockbuster that combines elements of Mad Max, Indiana Jones and Sergio Leone’s westerns. If you haven’t seen it you should.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/the-good-the-bad-the-weird/
A bit too convoluted for its own good but it’s got a spider that shoots lightning, magic staves that shoot fireballs, electric webs, smoke machines all over the place and an overly dramatic story which all makes it fun.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/the-web-of-death/
Feels like Bong Joon-ho’s take on a Terry Gilliam film. Not as quirky and playful with the camera but lots to fun characters and quirky playful things happening. I don’t feel it’s a classic like some of his other films but it is a lot of fun and pushes all right buttons.
Fun men (and a woman) on a mission kung fu flick. Fighting isn’t up to par with the better Shaw Bros. films but it manages to shine with a fun ending of the boss fight and some twists and turns.
Good but short and ends very abruptly but also in a good way. I do feel there will be better ZATOICHI movies in the series and I’m going to round up my rating to a four but I do feel this is more of a 3.75. Solid and expands the world of Zatoichi nicely.
source https://letterboxd.com/jballison/film/the-tale-of-zatoichi-continues/
Even more grounded than some of the other Connery Bond, I feel FRWL gets overlooked. It’s got a great carefree Bond, a great villainess in Number 3, and the Istanbul and Orient Express is a terrific setting.

I need to watch it again. I get the general gist but there is a lot of pieces that I am totally perplexed about and that is a good thing. Glad that my first time watch ever was theatrical.
Like many of Lynch’s films it is beautiful, grotesque, and so melodramatic. I love how it really brings to the forefront Laura Palmer and how the world revolves around her. Can’t wait to finally dive in The Return finally.

A hidden gem for me from the Shaw Brothers. A bit of mystery thrown in with a lot of great classic over the top martial arts action.

The more I think about it, the more I love it. It does suffer from a few moments of the bad kid humour that the first one also suffers from but the spectacle, action and the overall story is great. It really builds through the whole movie and the end battle is wicked. I also loved the look and feel of the animation.
Can’t wait for part 3 which is sure to happen since this may already be the highest grossing world wide film to date by now.
Lose the kiddish silly humour and this would be an excellent animated myth telling. The silly humour isn’t enough to make me dislike it as there is so much to love with a great story, action and look. I am hoping the sequel drops some of the humour.
I can watch most bond movies over and over and over. In addition to the terrific introduction to James Bond, I love the 3 blind mice as well as the rest of the music. Only downside is the dragon. I don’t mind the vehicle I just dislike how some of the characters believe it’s a real monster. The rest is pure gold.
Such a 90s movie. Sexy and horny, colourful, and campy.

Starting a rewatch after more than 30 years. Just watched the first episode. Planning on hitting up to season 2 then will watch FIRE WALK WITH ME when it plays at the Broadway in February. Then I’ll finally watch the return which I have not seen.
First episode is still amazing with its off kilter feeling and overall world building.
What started out as a good but standard crime redemption story takes a turn half way through and becomes something cooler. All I’ll say is that this isn’t your standard action thriller and it’s worth checking out. I do kinda wish we had 1/4 stars as I feel it fits more of a 3.75 instead of a 4 out of 5.

Looking at my previous 4.5 out of 5 for this makes me wonder if I just wasn’t feeling it as much tonight in the double bill with Murnau’s because I was a bit tired.
It is making me question my feeling of ranking all 3 from top to lowest as Eggers, Herzog, and then Murnau. I may need to do a triple bill sometime to really figure the ranking out.

First time seeing it in the big screen. Double bill with Herzog’s version.
Just didn’t click with me like most Japanese Godzilla movies do. I think it felt a bit too American for my tastes. Not sure if this feeling is as causes by the little monsters and the soldiers fighting them or the alien aspect of the monsters. Still worth seeing but one of my less favourites.

Great Shakespeare adaptation. I really want to know how they filmed the arrows scene.

I really don’t have a problem with characters and their actions as being problematic especially when it comes from a different generation. I’m not for movies that promote hatred or other bad things but I don’t feel that THE SEARCHERS promotes the problematic nature of Wayne’s character or that it is promoting the violence. His character is meant to be disliked but still shows some compassion.
So taking away the whole discussion of it being problematic then I enjoy THE SEARCHERS as it is a beautiful movie. It has some humour that works and the action is done really well. I will also say that my tastes for westerns aligns much more with the spaghetti westerns and the other grittier stories.
Still enjoyed seeing it up on the big screen and it is a movie you must watch if you are into westerns.
Much more a black comedy than I realized from having seen the remake. Alec Cawthorne really steals the show. Don’t want to say much more with all the twists and turns. It is lots of fun.
Formulaic but fun with good chemistry between the characters.

Really dig the story of Ming losing himself in wanting to be the good guy but the plotting is a bit all over the place. It was nice to have both Leung and Lau back to close out the series and as a whole it is still up in my favourites due to how strong the first two movies are.
