Ballerina, 2025 – ★★★

The movie is hurt by the fact that it takes place in the Wick universe which means comparisons to the other movies need to be made. While the big climactic battle (don’t want to spoil it) is pretty damn cool the rest of the action including both Eve and Wick doesn’t really feel as cool or energetic. The movie also suffers in that the henchmen and mini-bosses aren’t as cool as the one’s Wick has survived through. I doubt I’ll ever revisit it (I have revisited all the Wick movies a few times already). There is another part at the end which I’m not a fan of. Not going to get into spoilers but it does take away a bit from the movie as a whole.

The Life of Chuck, 2024 – ★★★★

Figured out the mystery movie at Landmark was this by the rating and time. Was very happy the screening was what I thought it would be. I had kept myself from knowing anything about this other than that it is not a Stephen King horror. Really dug it overall but and enjoyed the 3 parts and how it told the story. I liked the themes and the whole point but it didn’t fully nail the ending for me 100%. I think I was expecting the ending to be more impactful but I had already taken in the themes and the meaning of the movie before the wrap up.

Bring Her Back, 2025 – ★★★½

I should like this more than I did.  The gross out moments are done extremely well and the movie is beautifully shot.  Unfortunately, I just didn’t connect with the story and I feel like that this is the stereotypical A24 movie about dealing with trauma.  I’ll give it another shot at some point as it may have just been a mood I’m in thing possibly.

Sinners, 2025 – ★★★★★

Loved this. I love the impact of the music scenes so much. The scene in the hall that transcends time and calls to both the living and the dead is done so well and The Rocky Road to Dublin scene is pure beauty. The movie is constantly building and dealing with the ideas of sins fulfilling people and are not always evil is a powerful message.

I have heard people feel the last third feels rushed but by that point I was fully living in the world and do not feel that the focus of the movie should be on the last third.

Watching this also has made me want to revisit (again) BLACK SNAKE MOAN for the music and how it talks about the power of music.

Currently it is my favourite of the year and I am sure my respect for it will grow upon rewatches.

Strange Darling, 2023 – ★★★½

Strong performances but watching it after knowing it’s going to try and subvert the viewers’ expectations didn’t ruin the twists but it blunted them for sure. It also feels a little bit pretentious in its need to have the Shot in 35mm on the opening and the extended end scene feels like it’s deliberately trying to create the next big ending scene for an actress like in IMMACULATE or PEARL.  Those scenes felt organic here it felt placed in.  I would have liked to have seen it at a fest completely blind as I may have liked it more then.

Alien: Romulus, 2024 – ★★★½

Wanted to do a re-watch to see if my original thoughts had changed.  I stand by my original review.  Most of the cast is forgettable, having them be younger and less worn down by the system is a detriment, not enough time is spent with the characters before hell breaks loose, and some of the call backs are unnecessary fan service which feels out of place.

It’s a roller coaster thrill ride that is fine but is also pretty hollow and misses the mark compared to the original first two movies.

Andy is still the best character and I’d prefer it if they stopped trying to create a new Ripley each time as she is iconic and you’re setting yourself up to fail.

Pretty Maids All in a Row, 1971 – ★★★

Watched as a curio. Angie Dickinson, Rock Hudson, Telly Savalas, and Roddy McDowell in a 70s sex comedy written by Gene Roddenberry and Directed by Roger Vadim (Barbarella).  Comedy doesn’t really work that well and the whole murder mystery is not really a mystery as you are let in on who the murderer is.  It’s very much of its time but that doesn’t really add or take away from the movie.  Enjoyed seeing it as a curio piece but it’s not a very good movie.

Freebie and the Bean, 1974 – ★★★★½

It’s if it’s time and I loved it.  I know there was probably a script but the whole movie feels like Caan and Arkin were told to just improvise and screw around with each other, the supporting characters and even the whole city.  A total blast that is really insane.  I’m not sure if it is but it might be the first buddy cop parody.

Love Hurts, 2025 – ★★★½

Another movie, like last night’s watch of Fight or Flight that unfortunately follows better movie.  It really should not be in the discussion along with Everything Everywhere at Once as they are very different movies but I see a bunch of reviews where people mention it.

I loved the Raven & Ashley story and even got a kick out of other hitmen pair and their characters. The Marvin & Rose story is okay.  The action is fun enough but not outstanding.  Overall an okay fun watch.

Bloody Parrot, 1981 – ★★★½

Convoluted but also a bunch of fun with witches, hopping vampires, lethal poisonings, nudity, and fun fights.  It feels like it was influenced by Evil Dead but it also came out in  1981. There are a bunch of widely known and seen Shaw a Brothers films and the. There are the lesser known ones that are a blast to discover.  If you can track this down it’s a fun watch.

The Italian Job, 1969 – ★★★★½

Sure the movie is of its time with Caine’s and Hill’s characters but this one is one I have a total soft spot for.  The getaway scene is amazing in how it feels fast paced even though it’s not really that fast paced and it has so many cool for the sake of being cool shots.  I love the ending and Caine singing the theme is a total blast.

Ne Zha 2, 2025 – ★★★★½

The more I think about it, the more I love it. It does suffer from a few moments of the bad kid humour that the first one also suffers from but the spectacle, action and the overall story is great.  It really builds through the whole movie and the end battle is wicked. I also loved the look and feel of the animation.

Can’t wait for part 3 which is sure to happen since this may already be the highest grossing world wide film to date by now.

The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon, 2023 – ★★★★

What started out as a good but standard crime redemption story takes a turn half way through and becomes something cooler.  All I’ll say is that this isn’t your standard action thriller and it’s worth checking out.  I do kinda wish we had 1/4 stars as I feel it fits more of a 3.75 instead of a 4 out of 5.

Nosferatu the Vampyre, 1979 – ★★★★

Looking at my previous 4.5 out of 5 for this makes me wonder if I just wasn’t feeling it as much tonight in the double bill with Murnau’s because I was a bit tired.

It is making me question my feeling of ranking all 3 from top to lowest as Eggers, Herzog, and then Murnau.  I may need to do a triple bill sometime to really figure the ranking out.

The Searchers, 1956 – ★★★★

I really don’t have a problem with characters and their actions as being problematic especially when it comes from a different generation.  I’m not for movies that promote hatred or other bad things but I don’t feel that THE SEARCHERS promotes the problematic nature of Wayne’s character or that it is promoting the violence. His character is meant to be disliked but still shows some compassion.

So taking away the whole discussion of it being problematic then I enjoy THE SEARCHERS as it is a beautiful movie.  It has some humour that works and the action is done really well.  I will also say that my tastes for westerns aligns much more with the spaghetti westerns and the other grittier stories.

Still enjoyed seeing it up on the big screen and it is a movie you must watch if you are into westerns.
